With a record-breaking app and more mobile devices in use, the 2014 World Cup was bound to gain massive social media traction (even on Google+). Super Bowl XLVII in 2013 (also known as the Harbowl, where the lights went out and Oreo taught the Internet that “you can still dunk in the dark“) held the single sporting event Facebook record until Germany defeated Brazil by six goals. Days later, the World Cup Finals broke that record again, with 88 million Facebook users generation over 280 million World Cup interactions during yesterday’s World Cup Final. Twitter users also broke the tweets per minute record with 618,725. Over the past month, the World Cup generated over three billion mentions on Facebook. Throughout the World Cup, viewers all over the world shattered TV records for the event, setting the stage for social buzz generation.

Outside of social, the World Cup experienced several record-breaking moments. This year, Germany made its eighth trip to a FIFA World Cup Final, which is more than any other team. During the 7-1 blowout over Brazil in the semifinals, Germany’s Miroslav Klose became the sole record holder for most World Cup goals (16). The striker got a thunderous ovation as he exited the pitch last night when Mario Götze, who would go on to score the game winner, replaced him. Klose’s goal also helped tie the record set in France in 1998 for most goals scored in a single World Cup (171).
