Hold on a minute.
Yes, the Christmas holiday season is about to start, but first we’ve got a fairly large national holiday: Thanksgiving Day… or what some brands are referring to as “Early Black Friday.”
Even being in the advertising industry, I’m skeptical that opening doors on Thanksgiving Day is a good, profitable idea. The National Retailer’s project Americans will spend over $600 billion this holiday season, and 75% of consumers expected to use their mobile devices to shop during the holidays. As online shoppers tend to spend more, how much more do retailers stand to make by opening their door on Thanksgiving Day?
Aside from the profit aspect, retailers still have a responsibility to their employees. After all, it’s their Thanksgiving Day, too. Some retailers have made the decision to remain closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, despite the fact that their competitors will be opening their doors—choosing to let their Black Friday sales fall on Friday.
For me, Thanksgiving is about family, reflection and, yeah, feasting. The holiday is about truly looking around and expressing my gratitude to love my loved ones. It’s not about rushing through dinner, so I can get to the stores in time to catch the first of many great sales that will come up over the next month. I also rather watch Friends Thanksgiving episodes with my family after eating a delicious turkey meal, than participating in the possibly dangerous frenzy that is Black Friday (or Early Black Friday).
At the end of the day, retailers can wait a day to “haul out the holly” so that consumers can “fill up the stockings.”
